There are little things we can all do to lift our mood or ease our anxiety – we need to find what works for us.
This could be as simple as taking a walk in nature, prioritising our sleep or opening up to a friend. Our little thing, if we keep doing it, will make a big difference to how we feel.
Sick notes / Fit Notes
A doctor must sign a medical certificate note, also known as a Fit Note, which your GP can use to guide your return to work. Work can be crucial for recovery from illness or injury, and your GP can declare you unfit for work or potentially fit for work with employer support.
Your GP can also offer advice to your employer on how your illness or injury affects you, suggesting accommodations such as part-time work or modified duties, especially if, for instance, you have back pain and need to avoid heavy lifting.
Fit notes are also referred to as doctor's notes, sick notes, medical certificates, or doctor's statements.
If you've already consulted a doctor at the practice for your condition or the hospital has sent a sickness letter, you may not need another appointment. It's recommended to pre-book your next sick note appointment to avoid last-minute scheduling. The doctor might conduct a phone consultation depending on the situation.
If you haven't seen a doctor at the practice and there's no medical information on your illness, you'll need an appointment to obtain a certificate. Urgent appointments are reserved for medical emergencies, not certificate requests.
In both cases, rules govern the issuance of sick certificates, and the GP may not be able to provide one based on the information you provide.
If you're under hospital care, your certificate may come from the hospital rather than the practice.
Requesting a Fit Note
If you are off work sick for seven days or less, your employer should not ask you for a doctor's certificate. You will need a medical certificate if you are off work sick for more than seven days.
When you work out the number of days that you've been sick, you need to count all the days in a row you've been sick, including days you do not usually work, such as weekends and bank holidays.
Self certification forms
Your employer can ask you to confirm that you've been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. This is called self-certification.
If your employer doesn't have their own form, instead they may use an SC2 form from HM Revenue & Customs Employee's Statement of Sickness.
Sickness of more than seven days
If you're off work sick for more than 7 days, your employer will usually ask for a fit note (or Statement of Fitness for Work) from a healthcare professional. Fit notes are sometimes referred to as medical statements or doctor's notes.
When you need a certificate will also depend on your employer's company policy on sick leave (or sickness absence). This policy should tell you how many days you can be off sick before you need a note.
